Traditional Lifeways: Bird Hunting
“The Traditional Lifeways Curriculum: BIRD HUNTING,” offers students K-12 the traditional knowledge of the elders and the skills of math and science needed to maintain a healthy environment for both birds and the people of the Upper Kuskokwim Region of Interior Alaska.
Five units provide information concerning: Waterfowl Game, Upland Game Birds, When and Where to Hunt Birds, How to Hunt, and Uses of Game Birds.
Many of the Activities invite Elders to share their experiences and knowledge about waterfowl and game birds. There is an upland bird-spotting trip, planning for a bird hunt and practicing traditional and modern hunting methods. The guide contains traditional bird stories and many visuals for bird identification. The curriculum meets the Alaska State Education Standards for Math and science and the Standards for Culturally Responsive Schools.
